What is Sports Therapy?
Sports Therapy is commonly described as an aspect of healthcare that specialises in Musculoskeletal Injuries and their rehabilitation. It is widely understood that people believe they are exempt from accessing a Sports Therapist. This is because they may not play sports or their condition was not brought on through a sporting injury. Does this sound like you? Fear not! Sports Therapists may just be able to help! We can help with the treatment and advice of a wide range of soft tissue injuries.
Whether you sustained the injury doing some gardening at home, out walking the dog or just during your daily life at home or at work. We can use our knowledge of the physiological and pathological aspects of injuries in order to help with many soft tissue conditions. Do we only do Sports Massage? This is another question that is asked frequently throughout the profession.
Yes, Sports Massage is an integral part of our injury rehabilitation in order to treat imbalances within the structures. However, it is not all that we can offer. Within our evidence-based practice, we look at the injury from start to finish using skills of assessment and diagnosis. We then look at functional exercises and adaptations in order to prevent the reoccurrence of injury.
Is a Sports Therapist a Physiotherapist?
No, we are not Physiotherapists. The key difference is that Sports Therapists Graduate training is focused solely on creating quality and advanced understanding of Musculoskeletal Injuries. They look at how to help an individual get back to a functional level of fitness in order to continue their chosen lifestyle or sporting activity.
Physiotherapists, throughout their Graduate training, look at Musculoskeletal Injuries as well as others such as Neurological, Cardiovascular and Respiratory conditions. This enables them to have a wider understanding of many medical conditions. They then try to educate and rehabilitate individuals on how to get back to living comfortably in their day to day life Please be assured,… If we cannot help you then we won’t. If your condition is not suitable for the treatment of a Sports Therapist you may be advised to seek advice from your General Practice.
We hope this has given you an insight into Sports Therapy! If you have any questions or you are not sure if it is right for you please do not hesitate to contact us
